3 Kitchen Design Tips Everyone Should Know

The kitchen is one of the most frequented rooms in the home. It is where we eat, converse, hang out, and enjoy one another’s company. Thinking about a new kitchen design can be overwhelming. There are so many choices to consider and so many different moving parts. So, where do you start? Obviously, there are a few basic components to every kitchen. There is always cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and flooring. Even so, kitchen design does not have to be stressful. These are the 3 best kitchen design tips that everyone should know when beginning the kitchen design process.

  1. Stick to a Style

If you are planning to design your kitchen, the process will be easier if you determine your style before you start. The toughest part will be narrowing down your options and zeroing in on exactly what you want your kitchen to look like. The almost effortless part is finding inspiration. You can do this by collecting a bunch of random image styles that speak to you, but be careful not to overthink things. Just have fun with it. You can collect magazine clippings of other kitchens or create a kitchen inspiration board on Pinterest. This should be the most fun part of your entire design process.

Once you have a general idea of what you want to achieve, call a design expert to begin making these ideas a reality!

  1. Put Function First

If you ever decide to sell your house, people will appreciate a kitchen that is functional. A functional kitchen shows tremendous usage potential and will increase the value of your home.

Although you want to have a style in mind before beginning your design, function is just as important as style, if not more so. It is crucial to keep functionality in mind throughout the entire design process because it is the meat and bones of your entire layout. Having a style in mind is helpful because you can shop for stylish items that meet your functionality needs. For example, your style might call for a freestanding sink, but it might not be a functional choice if it disrupts your kitchen’s work triangle

  1. Think Family Friendly

Aside from kitchen style and functionality, you have to think about you and your family. There is a design concept called universal design that encourages the opposite. It encourages you to design your kitchen for other people’s conveniences. This is not an entirely bad idea, but do not obsess and get carried away. When you get carried away in other design theories, you can lose sight of your dream kitchen.

The theory of universal design says your kitchen should be designed to be accessible to all people, regardless of their age, size, or ability. It is a wonderful theory to embrace, however it is stressful to please everyone. More to the point, all families are entirely different. It is kind to want to create a kitchen that functions to please the entire neighborhood. But, also keep in mind what you are looking to stylistically achieve.

A good tip for kitchen design is to base your decisions around your needs and your family’s needs. How many kids do you have? Are there any seniors? Who does the cooking? Choose lighting, layouts, appliances, storage solutions, and surfaces that work for you and your family.
