Spring Clean Your Bathroom

Upon March’s arrival comes the first day of spring – a time that freshens up nature’s appearance – and brings on the sanitation frenzy home owners are all too familiar with: Spring cleaning. Sure, you’ve got an entire house, apartment or condominium to clean, but it’s important to note which spots need the most attention, and which places need to be made a priority. Even if you clean it on a regular basis, the bathroom should definitely be at the very top of your spring cleaning checklist.

Prepare the Area

In order to prepare for the actual cleaning of your bathroom, prepping the space is the initial first step that has to be taken – especially since it’s difficult to clean an area when you have to constantly move around bothersome items or materials. Start clearing out the room by placing all of the dirty linens (towels, rugs, wash cloths, and any clothing) into multiple laundry baskets. Then, empty out the trash bin. The shower or bathtub comes next; remove the shower mat, shampoo and any other products. Finally, empty out all of the unwanted clutter that is under the sink and in the medicine cabinet.

Make a Checklist

Creating a to-do list is helpful when trying to organize any aspect of your life – but it is especially beneficial if you’re in the midst of cleaning your bathroom (or any room of the house). If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed and need a bit more guidance, consult the Internet for some handy, pre-made cleaning checklists to ensure you’ve got everything covered. If you want to create your own cleaning checklist, that’s fine too – just remember to include every aspect of the process, from scrubbing down the toilet bowl to reorganizing the medicine cabinet to unclogging the air vents.

Be Thorough

Now is not the time to be stingy, but instead, to use cleaning products to the fullest of their ability – and clean literally every nook, cranny and area of the bathroom. Mandatory spots to be cleaned include the toilet, bathtub or shower, floor, sink, mirror, shower curtain, walls, ceiling, medicine cabinet and the cupboard under the sink. And remember those dirty linens you removed before? Run those through the washer and dryer too, so that you can truly restore your bathroom to a hygienic and unpolluted state. If you’re still feeling unmotivated during the actual step that involves cleaning, one recent study found that human bacteria are able to recolonize a bathroom an hour after it’s been cleaned – so needless to say, it’s crucial to be extremely thorough when cleaning your bathroom.  For this reason especially, your spring cleaning session should set the groundwork (and standards) for a bathroom that is cleaned way more than one time a year.
