Spring Time in the Kitchen

Oh Spring, the season of rebirth. In the home, it is a time for spring cleaning; cleaning out closets of all the boots and heavy jackets, cleaning the windows to prepare them for opening and letting in a fresh breeze. But don’t forget about the kitchen!

Yup, there it is again. Before we get to the fun stuff like decorating and maybe even painting, you have to start with spring cleaning. Sounds like a bummer but it’s just one of those things that you have to do, especially if you’re planning on touching up the kitchen. Here’s a quick To-Do List to hit on all the major areas that can use a thorough cleaning in the kitchen:

  • Dusting: ceiling fan, wall corners, art/photographs
  • Clean out the fridge and wipe it down
  • Wash windows, vacuum windowsills and rinse off screens
  • Apply oven cleaner to the oven and let self-clean
  • Clean out kitchen cabinets and organize contents
  • Let the dishwasher run empty
  • Wipe down toaster, microwave, etc.
  • Sweep and mop the floors

Phew! Now you’re ready to move on to the fun stuff.

Let Your Kitchen Breathe

Now that the windows are all clean, open them up! There’s nothing better than feeling the breeze from opening up the windows for the first time in the season.

Get rid of the blinds. Let the sun’s rays sneak in and light up the kitchen. Go curtain-less. This will really put that big, beautiful window on display and hopefully, the scene outside of it is something pretty to look at as well.

Add a Pop of Color

Nothing adds life to your kitchen quite like color selection. There are many ways that you can incorporate a fun, spring color into the design of your kitchen.

Maybe you already have bits of a yellow or orange hidden in your backsplash or softly layering the walls. Don’t be shy, let the colors breath! A bold way of adding accents of color are through cookware and other utensils. What’s more eye-catching than an orange set of pots and pans or yellow towels and placemats?

If your kitchen doesn’t already have a color incorporated into its theme, the opportunities are endless. And here’s a tip: pastel are in! Those minty greens and light pinks can be the perfect accent for a neutral-colored kitchen.

Dabble in Some Paint

Feeling like your kitchen needs a whole new change? How about a fresh paint job? Drawing the attention to your walls with a luminous new color gives you the chance to tone down the theme with neutral colored accents.

Too big of a project for you but like the idea of dipping your fingers in some paint? If your cabinets feature glass doors or another style that allows a peek inside, consider the new stylish technique of painting the inside of your kitchen cabinets.

Decorate, Decorate, Decorate

If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, you’re probably getting tired of staring at the same old things up on the wall. You may have loved that painting when you first hung it up but do you still? Take advantage of how easy it is to change up what’s hanging on your walls.

Why not a funky vase on top of the cabinets? Not only does it add character, but it’s another opportunity for that pop of color that was stressed before.

And what says “spring” better than a beautiful bouquet of flowers right on the kitchen table! From daisies to daffodils and lilies to tulips, you can experiment with a new bunch each week. Not to mention the fresh fragrances that these bouquets will add to your kitchen!

A little bit of work can go a long way. You’ll be surprised at how much these small changes will liven up your time in the kitchen with all things, from cooking to spending time with the family at the table.
